FFXI Maps 1.12
I just updated all the ingame FFXI maps with the new maps from ffxi-atlas.com. I also added a few other things to some Sea and CoP maps.

You can get my map pack from here:
http://rapidshare.de/files/10869914/ffxi-maps-1.12.zip.html

Here's a sample screenshot (click for larger):

Just unzip the file ffxi-maps-1.12.zip to your \PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI directory and everything should install to the right location. In the event that it doesn't, copy the directory structure manually to \PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI. You might want to backup your map DATs before installing this, just in case.

I haven't thoroughly tested all the maps yet so let me know if there are any problems. I expect the Pso'Xja maps might be a little bit screwy cause I don't have the Pso'Xja map ingame and there are so many map files that all look the same for that one. Other than that, it should all work. Let me know if there are any problems.

Note that my Zilart and CoP maps aren't semi-transparent like the original SE ones. If anyone knows how to save DXT3 maps to look the same as BMP maps, please let me know.

By the way, BMPtoDAT is buggy as hell and I can't get it to work. I had to come up with a convoluted workaround to get FFXI to load my modified BMP maps. The next time I update maps I'm going to have to figure out a better way of converting the BMP ones.

Post any comments or suggestions here. Enjoy!

Jan 11th Edit #2:

If you downloaded version 1.1 or 1.11, get the newly posted 1.12 instead as 1.1 is missing all my dats from ROM2\17 and ROM2\24, and 1.1 and 1.11 have a bad West Sarutabaruta map. Sorry about that. If you have 1.11 already and just want the West Sarutabaruta map, you can get it from here:

Which ones are my map dats to back up, and should I just copy them to another folder?

I made a list of all the maps I replaced in the readme file in the zip. An easy way to back them up is just make whole copies of the following directories: ROM\17, ROM\18, ROM2\16, ROM2\17, ROM2\24, ROM3\3, ROM3\4, ROM3\5, ROM3\7, and ROM3\8

Those directories contain a bit more than maps, and I haven't edited all the maps in the game yet (I'm gonna add NPC locations to cities later on) but you may as well just back them all up anyway.

I will make a post on my livejournal explaining how to replace the BMP maps soon. I want to give a bit of time to allow other people to determine if there are any problems with what I did first.

Could you be more specific? I didn't use BMPtoDAT at all for any of the DAT files in the zip I posted. Which map in particular that I distributed doesn't work? I am aware of which maps are BMP and which are DXT3. All the original non-expansion maps are BMP except for Jugner, North Gusta, Xarcabard, Zeruhn, Buburimu, Meriphataud, and one Shakhrami map. Those ones I mentioned are DXT3 as are all the Zilart and CoP maps. I would expect any time SE updates an old BMP map from now on they will change it to DXT3 too.

I didn't replace the Mhaura map, and I just went to Mhaura in-game and checked the map there. No problems at all for me. Mhaura is ROM\18\81.DAT and no such file is included in my distribution. Any problem with the Mhaura map on your computer has nothing to do with my maps.

I haven't edited any town maps yet, except for the top floor of Tavnazian Safehold. I have plans to add NPC locations to town maps in the future but I haven't done so yet.

My original map pack was only given to a few people and I was not involved at all with the creation of the VCP maps, which I think is what you're referring to. The Ru'Aun Gardens map in my pack says which island corresponds to which God, and each entrance to Ve'Lugannon and Ru'Avitau is numbered corresponding to the markings on those maps. I've been going to sky for so long that I've long since memorized which entrance corresponds to which NM but I can see how that information would be useful. I will add it to my next version of the map. Until then, if you would like to use maps by anyone else in addition to my maps, lookup the dat which corresponds to the map you want to change in the readme file I included in my pack and swap that dat with someone else's dat for that map.

VCP 1.2 compared to your 1.12
(Anonymous)
2006-01-16 05:44 pm UTC (link)
Im just wondering what is exactly different between the VCP 1.2, and your new updated pack. Is it just new maps from ffxi-atlas with the new(er) NM pops that the VCP didnt have yet, cuz ffxi-atlas hadnt added them at its time of release, or what, and also ppl above where saying that your pack doesnt have the logging points etc that the VCP came with, im just curious as to what is the main differnce between the two packs, so i know if i should go with logging point maps, or updated NM maps, till i get lucky and find one with both ^^ (or if im blind and this does have both >.> ) I also wanted to say thanks for your hard work in testing this over and over and helping everyone get it up and working, very kind of you to help so much, wish you good luck in all your projects, keep on keeping on ^^'

I don't know what the maps look like in VCP 1.2 cause I didn't make that pack nor have I ever used it. I presume that pack used the maps from ffxi-atlas prior to that website's December update. My pack contains all the ffxi-atlas maps as they are today, plus a few other additions that I noted on my main LJ post. I tried to include all the harvesting/excavating/logging/mining points, chest, coffer, NM, and elemental spawns that are currently listed on ffxi-atlas. As pointed out to me by a few people I missed a few of the h/e/l/m points. I've already added a few of them and I plan on adding the rest shortly. I'm a little busy with schoolwork right now so I'll probably have an update to my pack, plus a guide on how to replace BMP maps in about 2 weeks.

Hey, I've tried your maps and really appreciate all the work you've done... excellent job!

Just wanted to make a note about transparency... a while ago I changed my fonts in FFXI which required editing the .dat file, and when looking at ways to edit it I found that you can get a DXT editor for GIMP (both are free). I ended up just editing after using GC3 to convert between bmp and dxt3.

http://www.gimp.org <- GIMP homepage, free photo editing software.
http://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/dds/ <- GIMP DDS Plugin

Hope this helps... thanks again for your hard work^^

Don't mean to be overly picky but is there any chance of getting the maps without the elemental spawns? I'm standing in Qufim seeking right now and there's so much crap on the map I can hardly tell what's what (mainly because the light elemental spawns are the same color as NM circles). If not I guess I can just redo these maps for myself once you make your guide to converting the maps. Either way thanks in advance for your hard work, good stuff.

On the Al'Taieu map.. the Quasilumin at (I-12) is in the wrong location. Its closer to the stone in the left side of the location. It is noticable to not see it on the map when you stand at this location. Just thought I would let you know.
